Experience sharing: How to choose earplugs

I started using earplugs in high school due to the influence of my roommate (I was tortured by my roommate's snoring and teeth grinding for five or six years), and I have continued this habit as an adult to help me stay away from noise troubles.

After more than ten years of experience in wearing earplugs, the summary is that you should not always worry about which earplugs to choose. Maybe you can open your mind and choose a few more to use in different scenarios.
For example, I wear sponge earplugs when I study and work (they don't feel present and can block nearby sounds), and I wear silicone earplugs when I sleep (silicone earplugs don't swell my ears after being worn overnight).

You should choose earplugs according to your own situation. Reference factors: ears secrete more oil/ears don't secrete much oil/large ear canal/small ear canal)
I have dry ears and small ear canals, so I usually use silicone earplugs and sponge earplugs. My requirement for earplugs is that they don't swell when worn for a long time.

I recently discovered a very good product, BET SLUMBUR, which is silicone earplugs and comes in three different styles.

BET SLUMBUR

I chose the SLEEP model (NRR: 19.1 dB), which can isolate most of the noise while sleeping, and it comes in 4 sizes ear tips, perfect fit. — S, M, L, XL.

And BET SLUMBUR is easy to clean with clean water. Just rinse and it can be used multiple times.

How to evaluate the sound isolation performance of an earplug?

In today's noisy world, sometimes we need more than just a quiet environment, sometimes we need earplugs that can help us isolate noise, concentrate, and improve work efficiency.

The main principle of soundproof earplugs is to use the sealing and elasticity of the material to fill the ear canal and block the propagation of sound waves, thereby reducing the sound received by the eardrum. Different sound-isolating earplugs come in different materials, shapes, sizes, and colors, and they block noise to varying degrees.

Generally speaking, the sound isolation effect of sound-isolating earplugs can be measured by Noise Reduction Rating (NRR), which indicates how many decibels of noise can be reduced after wearing earplugs.

Therefore, the higher the NRR, the better the sound insulation effect.

NRR is usually marked on the packaging, and can also be measured with professional instruments or mobile phone software.

BET SLUMBUR earplugs currently have three products: SLEEP, ENJOY and ENJOY Pro. Reach real noise reduction in a specific target frequency. Their noise reduction data are as follows:
BET SLUMBUR SLEEP Earplugs — SNR: 32 dB (NRR: 19.1 dB)
BET SLUMBUR ENJOY Earplugs — SNR: 28 dB (NRR: 16 dB)
BET SLUMBUR ENJOY PRO Earplugs — SNR: 24 dB (NRR: 13 dB)

Common noise environments are 30–40 decibels, and using BET SLUMBUR earplugs can effectively reduce the noise.

Which type of sound-isolating earplugs is better?

In bustling cities, sometimes we need some quiet time to relax. However, external noise often disturbs our rest and work. At this time, wearing a pair of sound-isolating earplugs is usually the best option.

Currently, soundproof earplugs are mostly in-ear style: they can be inserted into the ear canal to block sound from entering the middle and inner ear. They are mainly divided into three types:

Silicone earplugs:
Silicone earplugs need to be softened by soaking in warm water before use. Due to the soft and curved inner wall of the ear canal, if the earplugs are too hard, it may cause redness and swelling of the ear canal or ear pain due to not conforming to the curvature of the ear canal. Therefore, they are generally not suitable for long-term use. However, silicone earplugs are easy to clean and can be reused.

Foam earplugs:
Foam earplugs have good softness and hardness, making the ear canal comfortable, and they have good soundproofing effects without discomfort even after long-term use. Foam earplugs are made of low-pressure foam molding material and high-elastic polyester material. The surface of the noise-canceling earplugs is smooth, with slow rebound, and there is no feeling of swelling or pain in the ears during use, with a soundproofing effect between 25dB and 40dB. This type of earplug is very suitable for use during sleep every night. However, due to the weakening of the slow rebound effect after washing, foam earplugs are generally disposable after use. However, with the development of science, there are now some foam earplugs on the market that can be reused for over six months and can be washed.

Wax earplugs:
Wax earplugs are the originators of noise-canceling earplugs. They can be softened by hand and shaped to fit the ear canal. However, the disadvantage is that they are not hygienic enough, wax may also remain in the ear canal, making them difficult to clean. Moreover, wearing them for a long time may cause a feeling of swelling and pain in the ears.

BET SLUMBUR is an innovative soundproof earplug in 2024. It belongs to silicone earplugs but uses advanced passive technology to filter out external noise. They are made with a patented honeycomb microcrystalline filter that achieves true noise reduction at specific target frequencies.
